Abstract

A large part of Hasankeyf that named the Lower
city on the bank of the Tigris River the threat of being
submerged with the completion of the Ilısu Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) Project. Complementary
rescue projects have been presented to document, conserve
and rescue the cultural heritage within this area. The minaret
of the Sultan Süleyman Mosque, the subject of this study, has
been completely moved to its new location in the archeopark
area created in the new Hasankeyf settlement and has been
saved from the threat of being flooded by the dam lake. As a
result of the dismantling operations of the minaret of the
Sultan Süleyman Mosque, joint / rubble filling mortar samples that were obtained from different levels were examined
archaeometrically using various analytical methods. The
mortar samples from the minaret were first photographed
and coded after being visually evaluated. The physical, chemical and petrographic properties of the samples were determined within the scope of archaeometric studies. The strength properties of the mortars were determined according to
their unit volume weights and porosity properties. The samples contain highly water-soluble salts (anions) in basic conditions. The aggregate in clay / silt size constitutes the main
aggregate content of the samples. Mortars containing petrographically lime type binders were classified into four different subgroups with similar characteristics. In the aggregate
content of the samples, brick particles was also determined as
increasing the strength. PED-XRF analysis revealed that the
mortars employed for the minaret of the Sultan Süleyman
Mosque at Hasankeyf have dolomitic properties.
